IWAQ Ramadan Dinner 2010

On Friday 20 August Stephen attended the breaking of the fast dinner.

The Islamic Women's Association of Queenland (IWAQ) co-ordinated a packed-out ifthaar at Michael's Oriental restaurant on Friday.

The breaking of the fast was sponsored by the United Arab Emirates Red Crescents project.

Among the 450 invited guests were community leaders, state and federal politicians, government officials and IWAQ clients.

TravelSmart

Stephen met with constituent John Park who is one of the may people who have signed up to be TravelSmart .

TravelSmart program was about giving people easy access to information about their local travel options.

TravelSmart encourages people to think more about how their travel choices impact on their local community and environment.

Participating households will be invited to receive free, easy access to local information encouraging the use of healthier, more environmentally friendly forms of travel, such as public transport, walking, cycling and carpooling.

The Queensland Government encourages all community members to get involved to help promote a cleaner, greener lifestyle in the great south east.

Stretton State College visit to Year 7 students

Stephen was met with many great questions from the year 7 students at Stretton State College on Friday 20 August.

Students were each given a Parliamentary kit to help them learn more about the State Government Parliament and how it works.

Islamic Medical Association of Queensland Launch

On the 31 July 10 Stephen attended the launch of the Islamic Medical Association of Queensland. More than 90 doctors and members of the Allied Health Workers as well as prominent Islamic community leaders attended the launch held at Michael's Oriential Restaurant.



Runcorn Heights State School Leadership 2010

On Friday 19 February Stephen had the pleasure of presenting the 2010 Student Leadership badges to Runcorn Heights State School students.

Runcorn Heights State School goes Solar

Stephen met with Mr Glen Thomas Principal of Runcorn Heights State School to discuss the schools Solar lighting.

Mr Thomas said the school has had approx 600 standard flourescent lights changed to new solar lighting as part of the Bligh Governments Solar and Energy Efficiency Program in State Schools.

The school has been fitted with 2 x 5 solar panels which gererates approximately 2 kilowatts of electricity to run the new solar lighting. The initiative primarily aims to reduce energy consumption in Queensland State Schools by up to 30%.

Other schools in the Stretton Electorate to go solar include Calamvale Community College, Calamvale Special School, Stretton State College & Eight Mile Plains State School

Indonesian Earthquake & Samoan Tsunami Fundraising Appeal

Stephen attended the fundraiser for the Indonesian Earthquake & Samoan Tsunami Appeal on Sunday 25 October.

The fundraising event was organised by the Islamic Council of Queensland and supported by Lions Club of Kuraby, Archerfield Rotary and various other Muslim organisations, the event was held at the Islamic College of Brisbane with approximately 3,500 people attending.

A great day was had by all and close to $70,000 was raised and all the proceeds will go directly to the appeal.

Presentation of the Kameruka Cup

On 12 October Stephen presented Calamvale Community College with the Kameruka Cup for the second year in a row.

The Kameruka Cup Competition between Calamvale Community College and Stretton State College began in 2008 with Stephen sponsoring the Cup.

Both schools have entered various sporting teams in the competition in the hope of winning the prestigious trophy. The 35 interschool sports teams included Rugby League, Netball, Basketball, Volleyball, Touch And Soccer. The students who participated were from the Middle and Senior schools.

We congratulate Calamvale Community College for winning the Kameruka Cup and look forward to next year's competition.

On October 3 Stephen along with volunteers from Bulimba Creek Catchment, Kuraby Lions, Crescents of Brisbane and the Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter Day Saints planted 450 trees along Bulimba Creek at Kuraby.

The 450 trees are part of the re-vegetation plan for Bulimba Creek to help save the environment.

Stephen enjoyed getting in and helping out for a good cause.
